For retro-fitting an existing carport shade system, Absolute Steel Solar recommends using the PV laminate roofing system. This is a photovoltaic laminate (links to article Thin Film Technologies) that is thin, flexible, lightweight and is exceptionally durable. Designed with the highest quality UL approved components, our PV laminate has unique features not found on any other system.
Virtually Unbreakable!
It’s a photovoltaic laminate that is ideal for metal roofing in that you can walk on it and expansion is not an issue as well as contraction and curving. Unlike heavier and more fragile polycrystalline photocells that break easily, this PV laminate requires no roof penetrations and usually no additional structural support is required. And great for high wind areas too–the roof panel to PV laminate bond has been tested to 160 mph winds! When it comes to efficiency, Absolute Steel Solar laminates achieve a higher relative efficiency under high temperatures and low light.
Easy Peel & Stick Application!
Application is a snap—not even any screws to affix; merely adhere to the proper profile of metal roofing for a weather-tight and quick connect system. This saves a tremendous amount of money in labor and time. This gives you a more favorable return on investment (ROI) because of the low installation costs.
How Do I Retro-Fit Covered Parking?
Many covered parking structures are roofed with an R panel type of metal roofing.

Most of the time there’s a high rib extending an inch or more up, maybe an inch or more in width and then it drops down to smaller ribbing for 6 to 9 inches and then another high rib. The reason for using this type of panel is that because of the ribbing, it will span farther than a flat panel. The curves and angles make the panel stronger. The type of metal roofing that is used for retro-fitting or for new solar roofing does not have ribbing with exception of the standing seam. This is because you need the flat surfaces (12” to 16” wide) to adhere the solar laminate to. If your existing covered carports have R panel roofing on them, it’s possible that we’d have to remove the existing paneling, possibly enhance the supports and then put the metal roofing on that fits the PV laminate. On the other hand, and much better news for you, a majority of the systems we retro-fit can merely have the Solar SSR system installed right over the existing R panels! Why A PV Laminate for Your Existing Covered Parking?
Speed: A PV laminate solar roof goes on faster than any other solar panel system on the market today. No roof racks and ladder time is minimized.
Efficiency: Because of the remarkable range for temperature and shadow tolerances, PV laminate roofing produces more electricity than traditional crystalline panels on a watt per watt basis in actual power output.
Roof Flexibility: PV laminates can be installed over a wide range of roof slopes and geometries, from 3.5° to 60°.
Clean Design: With an Absolute Steel solar laminate, the laminate is applied directly onto the metal roofing system thereby maintaining the roof’s profiles from all directions. The system’s quick connect wiring system is hidden in the roof details which eliminates the typical negative visual impact associated with crystalline PV modules.
Reliability: With an Absolute Steel’s solar laminate you’ll have a solar roofing system that will last. That’s because there are no penetrations to the roofing system and the laminate is light weight so there’s no damage to the roofing system. And because the power is produced under a wide range of temperature and lighting conditions, the system will produce more power when you need it.
Resistance to Vandalism: Solar roofing laminates are highly resistant to vandalism as they have no glass materials to be broken and the laminates are adhered to the roofing system so aggressively that pulling them off the panels is just about impossible.
Lower Capital Outlay: Because the PV laminate is adhered directly onto the metal roofing panels, there is no additional mounting system such as what crystalline solar panels use so the costs of hardware and labor are drastically reduced. And for the balance of the system such as inverters, AC and DC connecters and such, only the most efficient components are used which results in more energy per watt installed.
Warranty: Our PV laminate is backed by a 20 year limited warranty and the metal roofing panels come with a 30 year warranty. The system warranty, meaning all the individual electrical components has a 5 year warranty.
